TURKEY ROASTER

Postby Ed » Tue Jun 09, 2009 2:52 am

I was going to Email this to Ranger Rick & decided to post it on here instead for those who may not have seen it before. I never have! This is a turkey roaster used by the Boy Scouts. Looks like a pretty simple set up & is supposed to be very safe & easy to use. The description said:
The turkey roaster is a metal sheet-lined square wooden box with wire mesh tubes fastened to the sides. A turkey is placed inside the center of the box, the tubes are filled with charcoal, lit (Unless you're Sean...), then the box is covered with a lid & the turkey roasted. Voile! Dinner!!
Trouble is...they didn't say if the turkey takes some hours to roast or a few days...one of our geniuses can figure that out...

Cooking time would depend on the size of the Turkey! I do about the same thing in my Webber charcoal grill at home with about a 14 lb. bird and it takes about four hours, give or take 1/2 hour either way. I use a meat thermometer to check for doneness. by inserting thermometer spike into the thigh area. When the temperture reaches 165 degree's it's done! You want to be sure poultry is well done because of the salmanila(sic?) thing, or you might come down with the Turkey Trots or worse to go with your Turkey dinner!

I don't see why you couldn't smoke a Turkey in your Turkey coffin by filling one or two of those charcoal tubes half full with charcoal and some wood chips of your choice on top of the coals. Kill two birds with one stone! No pun intended!

I am sure this will work but cant stand the taste of charcoal....reflector ovens have been used a long time around a campfire...for bread, biscuts and bird....anyway you can also cook a duck or goose on a spit made of sticks...it takes alot of care but in the primitive way it is worth the wait....RR :D :D

I guess that I didn't make myself clear!...You eat the smoked turkey, not the charcoal! The charcoal is your heat source!

If you use real lump charcoal(cowboy charcoal) instead of processed crap like kingsford or cheaper stuff. It might improve the flavor

It really does make a big difference, and burns hotter and much longer than briquettes!
