BOTNA BEND ELK

Postby Ed » Thu Jul 15, 2010 12:15 am

Take a look at this poor elk---he's either trying to swim home or going fishing! Butch & I visited Botna Bend at the end of June---the park was hit really bad by all the rain storms of late. There was debris everywhere & we saw at least 3-4 pumps placed here 'n there. Went to Fremont Days over this past weekend & they had ponds everywhere too & lots of damaged trees. The black powder living history camp was terrible---hardly any in attendance. Next year is their 25th anniversary event & they're hoping for better #'s. Guess we're pretty lucky we still have a club...

The living history camp at Fremont Days has always been a place mainly for newer buckskinners and many of the older 'skinners really don't care for "Dog & Pony Show" events, so they leave that for those who do! Same with Parades and Onawa! Rock Creek and Ft Atkinson clubs just set-up the small camp for general PR and support of the event, as Ft Atkinson especially is in the area! ..... Both those club's muzzleloaders are more a shooting bunch!

Dont know about years past, but Onawa has had quite the large buckskinner camp the past few years. This year was prob 30-40 camps.

Sean, When I mentioned Rock Creek and Ft Atkinson clubs. I was referring to the Fremont Days camp. Onawa was originally set-up by Steve Draper (Big Lake Park Supern.), who was a member of the Sioux River Muzzleloaders, at Sioux City. And the Council Bluffs M/L club (Kanesville). The Cherokee, Iowa club also had something to do with it. 30-40 camps is pretty darn good. I was up there this year on late Saturday for a while and it didn't really look that big, but you should know Not a bad turn-out!

Sorry Sean, ..........I was up there at around 6pm to deliver two powder horns to two different people and pick up another flintlock pistol, that was made for me by Rod Olson. I found one guy and it took me awhile to locate the other. Was asked to stay for supper and "Gee Gawed" with a couple old friends till about 11pm and headed back home!
